Dongguan, China
Dongguan, a Millbrae friendship city, also known as Tungkun, is a prefecture-level city located in central Guangdong Province, China with a population of over 8 million. It holds significant importance as an industrial hub within the Pearl River Delta. Dongguan is often referred to as the “workshop of the world” due to its vast industrial landscape. Dongguan offers a blend of profound history and a vigorous modern economy.
Dongguan’s city administration is considered especially progressive in seeking foreign direct investment. Dongguan ranks behind on Shenzhen, Shanghai and Suzhou in exports among Chinese cities with 65.54 billion in shipments (as of 2023). It is also home to on of the worlds largest shipping malls, the New South China Mall. Although the city is geographically and thus culturally Cantonese, the majority of the modern day population speaks Mandarin due to the large influx of economic migrants from other parts of China. The city is home to several universities, including Guangdong University of Science and Technology, Guangdong Medical University and Dongguan University of Technology.
